Marcus Braxton Merritt was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 31, 1977. Marcus grew up as a child in the Cathedral Projects (Boston). He graduated from Cathedral High School of Boston in 1995 and Cushing Academy in 1996, where he completed a post-graduate year. He went on to pursue football in college, attending Mississippi Valley State and Springfield College. Marcus spent his early years working as a youth worker in Boston. Prior to his passing, he worked in construction as a carpenter. Marcus was an entrepreneur in the clothing and music business.
In high school, he was a four-sport athlete playing basketball, football, baseball, and track & field. He currently holds Cathedral High School’s track & field record for the shot put. However, Marcus loved and excelled at football and was selected to the All-Scholastic Team, won Player of the Year, and led his team to the Super Bowl in his senior year of high school. He was also selected to play in the Shriners All-Star High School Football Classic for the top high school players in Massachusetts. Marcus attended the Ron Burton Training Village.
After college, he went on to play semi-pro football for the Boston Bandits from 2000 - 2012. He led the Bandits to four championships including a Super Bowl in 2003 along with being selected multiple times to the All-Star Team. In 2016, he was selected to the New England Football League (NEFL) Hall of Fame.
Marcus was a fearless and amazing human being who loved being with family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and would give the shirt off his back. He will especially be remembered for his amazing smile and joyful spirit who brought laughter to so many in his typical Marcus way. He cherished his family, friends, and dog Pepper, but nothing meant more to Marcus than his children and being a great father. He was known by his friends as “Baggs” and “Buff”. His presence in any room was heavily felt and he will be missed by so many.
